Re: Court Disorder

Dear Sir/Madam:

In response to a recent letter “Court Disorder”, a Miami resident dutifully responding for jury service was forced to endure an entire day of waiting without sufficient accommodations for food or basic courtesies. First, as a trial lawyer that recognizes the critical necessity of jury service; this citizen’s important message must be heard by the officials, judges and other court personnel responsible for management of the jury system. I have forwarded the letter to the Chief Judge and Office of the Court Clerk so that they are aware of this situation.

Jury service, like participation in the military and voting, are crucial elements of our democracy.   Making jury service easy, convenient and even enjoyable should be the goal of all of us involved in the justice system. Jury service is essential. It is the only fair mechanism of dispute resolution.  Reasonable, considerate and fair accommodations must be made for our jurors’ needs and schedules if we are to succeed in making service on a jury the invaluable element of the democratic process our country’s founding fathers designed it to be.
